How to Get the Most Out of Your Massage Therapy: Simple Before and After Tips

A few simple habits can make your massage feel even better—and help the results last longer.

Massage therapy is one of those things where a few small adjustments can make a big difference in how you feel afterward.

Whether it’s your first time or something you do occasionally, knowing how to prepare and what to do after can help you get more out of every session. We get asked these questions all the time so we thought we’d make a cheat sheet with some before and aftercare tips for you to help get the most out of your massage!

Before Your Massage

You don’t need to do anything complicated, but a few simple things can help your body get the most out of your session.

Stay hydrated
When your muscles are well hydrated, it’s easier to work through areas of tension. Try to drink plenty of water throughout the day leading up to your appointment. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure to let you visit the restroom before we get you on the table 😉.

Avoid heavy meals right before
A light snack is perfect, but a heavy meal can leave you feeling uncomfortable during the session.

Make it easy to get comfortable
You’ll undress to your level of comfort for your session, so wearing something easy to change in and out of can help you feel more relaxed from the start.

We also use massage lotion during your session, so you may notice a light layer on your skin afterward. Wearing something comfortable that you don’t mind getting a little lotion on can make your post-massage transition easier.

After Your Massage

What you do after your massage can make a big impact on how long the benefits last.

Hydrate again
Massage therapy increases circulation and helps move fluids through your muscles and tissues. Drinking water afterward supports your body as it processes everything that was worked through during your session.

Staying hydrated can also help:

  • Reduce post-massage soreness

  • Support muscle recovery

  • Keep your body feeling more balanced and refreshed

It’s a simple step, but it can make a noticeable difference in how you feel later on and we are happy to provide some water for you when your session is done.

Do you need to shower?
Not necessarily.

We use massage lotion during your session, and while it absorbs well into the skin, you may notice a light layer afterward.

Some clients like to leave it on for a bit since it can feel hydrating, while others prefer to shower later in the day. There’s no right or wrong—it really comes down to what feels best for you.

Give yourself time to slow down
Your body has just shifted into a more relaxed state, and giving it a little time to stay there can help extend the benefits of your massage.

If you can, try to avoid jumping straight back into a busy or stressful environment. We have am AMAZING balcony that you’re free to relax on and enjoy the sights and sounds of Downtown Glendora after your massage.

Pro tip: Book your massage so it ends before sunset, because we have a killer view most days to enjoy golden hour!

Slowing down is also important when it comes to exercise. Your muscles have just been worked on and are more relaxed, so intense workouts right after can feel like a lot on your body.

If you do want to move, something gentle like walking, stretching, or light yoga is a great option.

If you’re planning a heavier workout, it’s usually better to schedule it before your massage—or wait until the next day so your body has time to recover and fully absorb the benefits.

Is It Normal to Feel Sore?

Yes—sometimes.

If we worked through areas that have been tight for a while, you might feel a little soreness the next day. This is completely normal and usually fades within a day or two.

Gentle movement like walking or light stretching can help keep things feeling loose.

Consistency Makes the Biggest Difference

One of the most important things to know is that massage therapy works best over time.

You don’t have to come in constantly—but regular sessions can help your body:

  • Hold less tension

  • Recover more easily

  • Feel better day to day
