The 3 Foundations of a Good Facial Skincare Routine

Taking care of your skin doesn’t need to be complicated, expensive, or intimidating.

Whether you’re a teenager just starting to learn about skincare, someone who’s never really had a routine before, or simply trying to build better habits for your skin, there are a few foundational basics that truly matter.

When a new client visits us at the spa, we take time to talk through your skin, your concerns, your current routine, and your goals during your personalized skin consultation. One of the biggest things we often remind people is that healthy-looking skin usually starts with consistency and simple daily care long before advanced treatments or complicated routines come in.

So, here are 3 skincare reminders we give clients all the time when it comes to taking better care of their skin.

1. Cleanse Your Face Properly

Your skin deals with a lot throughout the day — makeup, sunscreen, sweat, oil, bacteria, and environmental pollutants all build up on the surface of the skin.

Cleansing helps remove that buildup so your skin can function properly and stay balanced.

This doesn’t mean using harsh scrubs or washing your face until it feels “squeaky clean.” In fact, over-cleansing can sometimes damage the skin barrier and create more irritation or dehydration.

Instead, focus on:

  • Washing your face consistently

  • Cleansing your skin before bed each night

  • Using a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type

Even this one habit alone can make a major difference over time.

2. Use a Moisturizer That Supports Your Skin

One of the biggest skincare myths is that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need moisturizer.

In reality, all skin types need hydration and barrier support.

The key is finding the right moisturizer for your skin’s specific needs. Dry skin, sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, and mature skin all benefit from different ingredients and formulations.

A good moisturizer can help support:

  • Hydration,

  • Skin barrier health,

  • Smoother texture,

  • Reduced irritation,

  • Healthier overall skin function.

Sometimes healthier skin isn’t about adding more products — it’s about using better, more supportive ones consistently.

3. Wear Sunscreen Regularly

If there’s one skincare habit that makes the biggest long-term difference, it’s wearing facial sunscreen.

Daily SPF helps protect the skin from:

  • Premature aging

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Collagen breakdown

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Long-term sun damage

Wearing daily sunscreen is especially important here in sunny Southern California because daily sun exposure adds up quickly. Even when you’re just driving, running errands, or sitting near windows. And no, it shouldn’t be just a summer add-in to your skincare routine for pool or beach time. You should use facial sunscreen every day. Rain or shine (Reminder: UV rays are can penetrate clouds!).

Bonus Tip: Drink More Water Than You Think You Need

Using the right skincare products matters, but your skin is also deeply connected to what’s happening inside your body.

Hydration plays an important role in supporting healthy skin function, elasticity, and overall skin appearance.

While drinking water won’t magically “cure” every skin concern, dehydration can absolutely leave skin looking more dull, tired, dry, or imbalanced.

Most people simply don’t drink enough water consistently throughout the day.

Sometimes one of the simplest forms of self-care is also one of the most overlooked.
