What Is DMK Enzyme Therapy? And What Can It Do for Your Skin?

If you've ever heard me talk about DMK Enzyme Therapy, you probably already know that it's one of my absolute favorite treatments to perform. And if you've seen pictures of someone immediately after their treatment, you might be wondering what in the world is happening with those crazy red lines all over their face!

DMK Enzyme Therapy is a professional skin treatment designed to work with the skin's natural processes, rather than simply focusing on what we see on the surface. It's the foundational treatment within DMK's approach to Skin Revision, which focuses on improving the condition and function of the skin through customized professional treatments and home care. These treatments are designed to support circulation, oxygenation, lymphatic movement and the environment surrounding your skin cells. By focusing on these fundamental processes, we can create a healthier foundation while also addressing concerns like acne, pigmentation, aging, congestion, texture and scarring.

And one of my favorite things about it is that no two treatments have to be exactly alike. The Enzyme Masque provides the foundation, but the treatments and products I use before it are completely customizable depending on what your skin needs.

What Does a DMK Enzyme Therapy Treatment Involve?

Every DMK Enzyme Therapy treatment is built around the application of DMK's signature Enzyme Masque, but what happens before the masque is just as important. We begin with a customized pretreatment based on your skin's current condition and what we're trying to accomplish. This may include exfoliation, extractions or other professional DMK treatments designed to address your specific skin concerns.

Once the pretreatment is complete, I apply the Enzyme Masque, which stays on for approximately 45 minutes. During that time, the masque gradually tightens and hardens on the skin, creating a very different experience from a traditional facial mask. After the 45 minutes, I carefully remove the masque, assess your skin's response and finish with products selected specifically for your skin.

What Makes DMK Enzyme Therapy Different From a Traditional Facial?

If you've read my article about Why I Love DMK, you might remember the factory analogy I use with my clients. Imagine there is a factory underneath your skin, and the skin we see on the surface is the product that factory produces.

We can do a lot to that finished product. We can exfoliate it, peel it, hydrate it, brighten it and make it look beautiful. But if we never address what's happening inside the factory, eventually it's going to keep producing the same product.

DMK Enzyme Therapy is where we really get to work on the factory.

That doesn't mean I don't love a great traditional facial, because I absolutely do and there is a time and place for all of those treatments. But what makes Enzyme Therapy so exciting to me is that we're looking beyond the surface and considering the environment and processes the skin relies on to function properly.

It's also important to understand that Enzyme Therapy isn't specifically an acne treatment, an anti-aging treatment or a pigmentation treatment. The Enzyme itself isn't necessarily targeting the brown spot or the breakout. Instead, it's supporting the underlying processes that healthy skin relies on, which is why I can use it as the foundation for so many different treatment plans.

What Skin Concerns Can DMK Enzyme Therapy Help Treat?

This is probably one of the most common questions I get, and my answer is: almost all of them!

Now, that doesn't mean Enzyme Therapy magically fixes every skin condition. What makes it so versatile is that healthy skin function matters regardless of what concern we're trying to improve. DMK gives me an extensive toolbox of professional treatments and products that can be combined with Enzyme Therapy, allowing me to create a treatment plan based on what your skin actually needs.

Here are some of the most common concerns I use DMK Enzyme Therapy to address:

DMK Enzyme Therapy for Acne and Congestion

If you're dealing with clogged pores, blackheads, excess oil, recurring congestion or acne-prone skin, Enzyme Therapy can become part of a much more comprehensive treatment plan.

This is where I think people start to understand why I get so excited about DMK. I'm not limited to saying, "Okay, you have acne, so here's the acne facial." I want to understand what's contributing to the congestion and what condition your skin is actually in.

Depending on what I see, I may incorporate different forms of exfoliation, extractions or professional products designed to address congestion and breakouts before applying the Enzyme Masque. Someone with oily, resilient skin and significant congestion may need a very different approach than someone experiencing inflamed acne alongside dehydration and a compromised skin barrier.

Both clients will benefit from Enzyme Therapy, but their treatments will absolutely not be identical.

DMK Enzyme Therapy for Pigmentation and Sun Damage

Pigmentation is another concern I work with constantly, especially here in Southern California. Years of sun exposure can leave behind uneven tone, dark spots and visible discoloration that become more noticeable as we age.

We can use DMK Enzyme Therapy as part of programs for hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and visible sun damage. Depending on the condition of your skin, we may incorporate targeted exfoliation, professional peels, alkaline wash or other corrective pre-treatments designed to address excess pigmentation.

But pigmentation can be complicated. Not every brown spot has the same cause, and I don't believe in blindly attacking discoloration with the strongest peel available. We need to consider the condition of the skin, its ability to tolerate treatment, the role of hormones and what may be contributing to the pigmentation in the first place.

This is why customization is so important, especially when we're trying to create results that last.

DMK Enzyme Therapy for Fine Lines, Wrinkles and Aging Skin

As our skin ages, we naturally experience changes in hydration, texture, firmness, elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Depending on what we're seeing, I can customize our treatments to focus on concerns such as dullness, rough texture, dehydration or visible signs of aging.

With DMK we also have an advanced technique called Muscle Banding, which incorporates all three DMK Enzyme Masques in a specialized application designed to work with the underlying facial muscles and help improve the appearance of firmness and tone. DMK's Enzyme Masque #2 is used as part of this specialized technique, which is designed to encourage a tightening response.

Of course, not everyone needs the most advanced treatment. Sometimes the skin needs more hydration and barrier support before we consider anything more intensive. My goal is always to choose the treatment that makes sense for the condition of your skin, rather than automatically assuming stronger is better.

DMK Enzyme Therapy for Scarring, Uneven Texture and Dull Skin

Sometimes there's one specific concern we're trying to address, like scarring or rough texture. Other times, your skin just looks a little...blah.

Maybe your makeup isn't sitting as nicely as it used to. Your skin feels rough, looks tired or has lost some of that healthy-looking glow.

DMK Enzyme Therapy can be incorporated into treatment plans for improving the appearance of texture, certain types of scarring and overall skin quality. The pre-treatments we choose will depend on whether your skin needs exfoliation, more targeted corrective work or a gentler approach focused on supporting its current condition.

For clients with more significant scarring or concerns that require advanced correction, we will absolutely need a more structured treatment plan where we can incorporate more advanced levels of treatment.

And sometimes there isn't a major skin concern at all! You may simply want to support your skin's overall health and maintain the results we've already worked toward.

That's one of the reasons I love Enzyme Therapy as part of an ongoing skincare routine.

So What Happens During a DMK Enzyme Facial?

Now that you understand a little more about the treatment, let's talk more about what the actual experience is like, because I will warn you right now: this is not your typical facial masque!

Your appointment starts like most treatments with me do. We talk about your skin, what you've been using at home, what you've noticed since your last appointment and what we're working toward. I assess your skin and customize the treatment accordingly. We will do our traditional double cleanse, extract where necessary and then choose our pre-treatment of choice and apply that accordingly.

Once we've completed the appropriate preparation and pretreatments, it's time for the Enzyme Masque. The masque stays on for 45 minutes and gradually becomes firmer and tighter as it sets. And when I say tight, I mean TIGHT. By the end, your face can feel like it's temporarily been set in concrete!

As the masque firms, you may experience pressure, pulsing (I call this the heartbeat in your face feeling), itching or a contracting sensation. Some clients absolutely love it and practically fall asleep. Other clients get to minute 35 and are VERY ready to hear me coming back into the room. Both reactions are completely normal, and I always prepare you for what to expect. I also like to finish those last 10 minutes with a hand and arm massage, which makes that final stretch a little more enjoyable!

Once the masque is ready, I soften and carefully remove it, assess how your skin responded and finish with the appropriate products for your skin.

And yes, after being under that tight masque for 45 minutes, taking it off feels pretty amazing!

What Is the DMK Plasmatic Effect?

You know those crazy red lines I mentioned at the beginning? That's called the DMK Plasmatic Effect, and it's one of the most fascinating things about Enzyme Therapy.

It's a temporary visible network of dilated capillaries that can appear after the masque is removed. DMK associates this response with circulation and the movement of oxygen and nutrients through the treated area.

And if you're wondering why that's beneficial, or why some people get a dramatic red roadmap while others barely show one, I've got an entire article explaining it!
