How to Properly Remove Makeup for Healthier Skin
Whether you wear a full face of makeup every day or just a little mascara and sunscreen, properly cleansing your skin at night is one of the most important steps in maintaining healthy skin.
We often remind clients that skincare isn’t only about the products you apply — it’s also about what you remove.
Makeup, oil, sweat, sunscreen, bacteria, and environmental pollutants build up on the skin throughout the day. If they aren’t thoroughly cleansed away, your skin can quickly become congested, irritated, and dull.
The good news? A simple nighttime cleansing ritual can make a major difference in your skin’s health, clarity, and long-term appearance.
Why Proper Makeup Removal Matters
Sleeping in makeup or rushing through your cleansing routine can contribute to several common skin concerns like:
Breakouts & Congested Pores
Makeup, excess oil, and environmental debris can trap bacteria inside the pores, leading to blackheads, inflammation, and acne breakouts.
Dull, Tired-Looking Skin
When dead skin cells and leftover product remain on the skin, your complexion can start to look rough, uneven, and lacking in radiance.
Premature Signs of Aging
Pollution, UV exposure, and oxidative stress can linger on the skin when makeup isn’t properly removed. Over time, this may contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping skin firm and resilient.
Eye Irritation
Mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow can accumulate around delicate oil glands near the eyes, sometimes contributing to irritation, discomfort, styes, or inflammation.
Reduced Effectiveness of Your Skincare Products
Even the best serums and moisturizers struggle to penetrate through layers of leftover makeup and residue. Cleansing properly helps your skincare products work more effectively.
The Double Cleanse Method: Our Favorite Way to Cleanse Skin
The gold standard for makeup removal and deep cleansing is the Double Cleanse Method.
This approach uses two separate cleansers:
An oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and oil
A water-based cleanser to deeply clean the skin itself
It might sound like extra work, but it's effective, and once you try it, it can become a soothing bedtime ritual, signaling to your body it’s time to wind down.
Step 1: Use an Oil-Based Cleanser to Melt Away Makeup
The first cleanse is all about dissolving and lifting away oil-based impurities like makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum (oil) without stripping your skin’s natural barrier.
Oil attracts oil, which makes oil cleansers incredibly effective for removing makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum without stripping the skin.
At our spa, we often recommend gentle cleansing oils because they cleanse thoroughly while still leaving the skin soft and balanced.
How to Properly Oil Cleanse
Start Dry: With dry hands, take a generous amount of your oil cleanser or balm.
Massage Gently: Apply it to your dry face and gently massage in circular motions. Focus on areas with heavier makeup, like eyes and lips. You'll literally feel your makeup melting away. Don't be afraid to get it into your lash line – it's designed to be gentle.
Emulsify (Crucial Step): Wet your hands and massage water into skin. The oil cleanser will turn milky. Continue massaging for about 30 seconds. This helps to break up and lift off dissolved impurities including makeup products, sunscreen and grime.
Rinse Thoroughly: Wet a soft, clean washcloth with lukewarm water and gently wipe. Rinse your face, pat dry and enjoy the softness.
Your skin should feel clean and comfortable afterward — not tight, dry, or squeaky.
Step 2: The Water-Based Cleanse – Deep Cleaning for Pores
Now that the makeup is gone, the second cleanse focuses on purifying your skin. This step targets water-based impurities like sweat, dirt, and any remaining residue, ensuring a clean canvas for the rest of your routine. The right cleanser depends on your skin type and goals.
Types of Cleansers We Commonly Recommend:
Cream Cleansers
Ideal for dry or sensitive skin, offering a creamy, nourishing cleanse.
Gel Cleansers
Great for anyone with normal, combination or oily skin depending on the cleanser. Can be formulated to give a deeper clean for oily or acne prone skin, but still should not strip the skin of all natural oils or be filled with too many intense ingredients that can cause irritation or water loss in the skin over time.
Gentle Foaming Cleansers
Can be used for many different skin types when formulated correctly. We don’t prefer these cleansers because we find they can be drying, so we generally recommend a gel cleanser that fits your skin type over a foaming cleanser.
How to Water Cleanse Properly
Wet Your Face: Apply a small amount of your chosen cleanser to damp skin.
Lather and Cleanse: Gently massage in upward, circular motions for about 60 seconds. This allows the ingredients to work their magic and stimulates circulation.
Rinse & Remove Thoroughly: Use a clean washcloth and lukewarm water to remove all traces of cleanser.
Pat Dry: Gently pat your face dry (don’t rub) with a clean, soft towel. Follow with appropriate toner on a cotton round to remove residual product or makeup completely and restore proper pH balance.
