If you've read my article about What Is DMK Enzyme Therapy?, you already know how much I love this treatment and how versatile it can be for different skin concerns.
But now I want to get into something I find even more fascinating.
How does it actually work?
Well get ready to dive deep because now we get to the fun science part!
The Science Behind DMK Enzyme Therapy: What Are the Enzymes Actually Doing?
First, let's talk about what an enzyme actually is.
Enzymes exist throughout your entire body. They're biological catalysts, which basically means they help chemical reactions happen more efficiently. Your body relies on enzymes for thousands of different processes, and your skin has its own enzymatic activity as well.
DMK Enzyme Therapy system uses transfer messenger enzymes to work with the skin's chemistry and support the processes involved in healthy skin function.
There's an important distinction here because the word enzyme gets used a lot in skincare.
If you've ever had an "enzyme facial," you may have experienced a fruit or plant enzyme used to help loosen and remove dead skin cells from the surface. I use enzymatic exfoliants too, but that's not the same thing we're talking about with DMK Enzyme Therapy.
DMK has separate enzymatic exfoliation products that I can use as part of the preparation when appropriate. The Enzyme Masque itself is designed around supporting skin function, particularly the processes involving circulation, oxygenation and lymphatic movement.
And this is where it gets really interesting!
How DMK Enzyme Therapy Works With Circulation and the Lymphatic System
Think about what a healthy cell needs to function. It needs oxygen and nutrients coming in, and it needs an effective way of managing waste and maintaining the environment around it.
Your circulatory system is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout your tissues. Your lymphatic system helps manage fluid balance and transport certain substances away from the tissues.
These systems are constantly working together, and they're incredibly important to the environment surrounding your skin cells.
DMK Enzyme Therapy is designed to encourage circulation through the treated area and support lymphatic movement. DMK describes a process it calls reverse osmosis, referring to fluid movement associated with its approach to clearing accumulated waste from the cellular environment.
The goal is to support an environment where the skin's normal processes can function effectively. These are the proposed mechanisms behind DMK's treatment system, rather than something we can directly measure just by looking at the skin after a facial.
Remember that factory analogy? This is where the science starts to connect with the bigger picture. We're focusing on the systems responsible for delivering nutrients, managing fluid movement and maintaining the environment those skin cells need to function.
Why Pretreatments Are So Important in DMK Enzyme Therapy
While the Enzyme Masque is the foundation of the treatment, much of the targeted corrective work happens through the pretreatments I choose before applying it. This is where I can get much more specific about the condition we're trying to improve.
When you come in for your appointment, I look at your skin, ask questions about what you've been experiencing and consider what we're trying to accomplish. From there, I decide what type of preparation makes sense. Depending on what your skin needs, I may incorporate exfoliation, extractions, products designed for congestion or pigmentation, professional peels or other DMK modalities. Sometimes I want to stimulate the skin and create a more significant response. Other times, I need to be much gentler because the skin needs support rather than additional stress.
The Enzyme provides a consistent foundation, while the pretreatments allow me to target the specific condition of your skin.
Why I Combine Advanced Peels and Alkaline Wash With Enzyme Therapy
This is another part of the DMK system that makes so much sense to me.
Some professional skin treatments intentionally create controlled damage to encourage a beneficial repair response. Chemical peels are a great example. Depending on the peel, we may be intentionally removing damaged layers of skin or creating a controlled inflammatory response because of the changes we want to encourage afterward.
DMK's Alkaline Wash is another advanced treatment that can create significant changes in the skin and is used for very specific corrective purposes.
I'm comfortable creating that controlled damage when I believe it's appropriate for someone's skin. But I don't want to just create an injury and say, "Okay, good luck healing!"
If I'm going to intentionally challenge the skin, I also want to think carefully about what happens during the recovery process.
That's why I incorporate my more intensive DMK treatments within the framework of Enzyme Therapy. We can use the pretreatments to target the specific condition we're working on, then incorporate Enzyme Therapy as part of our approach to supporting circulation and the skin's overall environment during recovery.
That doesn't mean Enzyme Therapy guarantees healing or eliminates the risks associated with more intensive treatments. Proper treatment selection, skin preparation, aftercare and allowing adequate recovery time are all incredibly important.
But I love that the DMK approach encourages us to think beyond how much we can remove or how aggressive we can be. We're considering how to support the skin on the other side of that treatment too.
Bringing It All Together
And this is why I get so excited about DMK Enzyme Therapy!
The Enzyme Masque provides the foundation, but the treatments I choose before it allow me to customize what we're doing for your skin.
Sometimes that means a gentler approach. Sometimes we're working on congestion, pigmentation or texture. And sometimes we're ready for more advanced corrective treatments.
What I love is that we're not just looking at what we want to change on the surface. We're also considering how the skin functions and how to support it throughout the process.
That's the bigger picture behind DMK Skin Revision.
